Multiplication and division

How do grouping and sharing connect?

Four groups of three contain twelve objects. Division can ask about the number of groups or the number in each group.

01 / Explore the explanation

Count groups and group size

Label the group count, group size and total separately. Four groups of three gives 4 × 3 = 12.

02 / Explore the explanation

Ask two division questions

If twelve are put into groups of three, there are four groups. If twelve are shared equally among four groups, each receives three.

03 / Explore the explanation

Handle a remainder deliberately

When the chosen total cannot be shared equally in whole objects, show what remains. Do not silently drop objects or change the total.

Move from explanation to exploration

Try the relationship.

The activity is a way to inspect an idea. Keep its learning aim and assumptions visible as you change the representation.
