Keep the aim visible
Choose a learning aim first. For a comparison task, the aim might be to identify the greater quantity and explain the comparison.
Inspect the representation
Aligned rows can reveal unmatched objects. Numerals name the amounts. A number line makes order and distance visible. Each representation needs a clear explanation.
Offer another response route
A learner might speak, point, arrange or write. Judge what their response shows about the aim, rather than assuming one response format is always best.
Try the relationship.
The activity is a way to inspect an idea. Keep its learning aim and assumptions visible as you change the representation.
