Prepare with a purpose.
- Make two distinguishable sets of eight and five counters.
- Read the chosen booklet example, then identify what its arrangement is intended to reveal.
- Prepare ten frames or draw two rows of five positions on a board.
Equipment and access
- Safe counters
- Ten-frame drawing or board
Invite an explanation.
Where can you see a complete ten?
What changed when two counters moved?
How do you know the total stayed thirteen?
Notice, then ask.
- Notice whether the learner connects the arrangement to 8 + 5 and 10 + 3.
- Listen for an explanation of the unchanged total, rather than only a recount.
Consider another route.
- Offer physical counters, enlarged drawn positions or a spoken description.
- Keep the two quantities distinguished by labels or patterns as well as colour.
